MAYBELLINE COLOUR DRAMA REVIEW: BERRY MUCH

MAYBELLINE COLOUR DRAMA REVIEW: BERRY MUCH
I have a forever growing collection of berry lipsticks - it's definitely becoming a bit of an addiction. I had been lusting over this lipstick pencil for a long time and finally purchased it a month or so back, from BeautySpin. It's definitely one of my favourite lipstick shades, so I thought why not do a review? Plus it's quite photogenic, I had to feature it.

What does Maybelline claim?
Maybelline claim that the Colour Drama lip kohl 'makes lips pop'. They say it has a 'creamy texture' and there's a range of 'on trend shades' to choose from.

First Impressions
I was definitely struck by the colour of this lipstick pencil when I first received it. It's such a gorgeous deep, red cherry shade. On application, I could tell it was quite highly pigmented but also quite creamy - not the kind that would become clumpy over time, or dry my lips out. I don't remember thinking anything negative about it, I was far too obsessed with the beautiful shade.

The Colour - how do I wear it?
Some people worry that a dark lip won't suit them, but I'm quite lucky in that I can wear dark lipsticks. I find that I have to avoid really light nude lipsticks, but dark lipsticks really suit my pale skin. I tend to wear this lipstick with a 'lighter' makeup look, meaning nothing too intense. I tend to go with a medium-high coverage foundation, neutral eye shadow, a little bronzer and of course the usual mascara and eyebrows. But, nothing too glam - the red lip is glam enough!

Application, Pigmentation and Finish
I find that applying this lipstick is quite easy. I sharpen it quite often to get the point I need to fill in the outer parts of my lip, but if you use a lip liner, you won't need to sharpen it as often. However, it has quite a creamy texture so it's used up quite easily, so do make sure you have a (big) sharpener to hand. Other than that, the formula is ideal. It has a sheen which I really like - it's not completely matte and 'clingy' but it's not too lustrous, either. With it being creamy, it doesn't dry my lips out as all or stick to parts of my lips which is the last thing I want in the winter months.

Staying Power
This is the only thing that lets this lipstick pencil down. Although this lipstick has a lovely formula and looks gorgeous on the lips, it doesn't really last any longer than 2 hours. If you're only popping out somewhere, a few hours is perfect, but if you're wanting a long-lasting shade, this lipstick isn't ideal. I find that because it's quite creamy, it tends to wear off and the colour doesn't really remain. It lasts longer around the outside of the lips which means after a few hours, unless you top it up, you're left with a horrific red outline on your lips. Definitely not what you want, right?! If depends how long you want it to last - I wouldn't recommend wearing it for long term, unless you want to be constantly popping to the bathroom to top it up.

Overall thoughts
Despite it's rather rubbish lasting power, the Maybelline Colour Drama lipstick pencil in Berry Much is one of my favourite berry lipsticks. Although good lasting power is something I look for in a lipstick, the shade and other qualities of this lipstick, for me, outweigh the fact that it doesn't last long. I tend to wear this lipstick when I pop to the shops or somewhere short-term. If you're looking for a lipstick to wear for a longer period of time, I would advise investing in something slightly more expensive - you pay for what you get.

Rating
Overall, I would give this lipstick a 3.5/5. It's a lovely shade, but it is slightly let down by its lasting power.

Would I repurchase?
Maybe not immediately, but yes. It's perfect to wear when I pop out. However, I prefer to wear MAC's Darkside or Rebel when I am going out for the day.

  1. I've been wanting to try these out for ages but everytime I spot the Maybelline section these bad boys are sold out.

  2. I can't even say how much I love Maybelline Intense Velvet lip pencils. You are right, they aren't the long lasting ones, but the formula is what makes me go back to them all the time!
